Signs and Symptoms of Pregnancy

  1. Presumptive Signs
    • Missed menstrual period
    • Nausea, vomiting, "morning sickness"
    • Frequent urination
    • Tenderness and fullness of breasts, breast pigmentation, discharge
    • Quickening (feeling life)
    • Dark blue coloration of vaginal lining
    • Stretch marks over abdomen, increased pigmentation
    • Linea negra (dark line down center of abdomen)
    • Pregnancy mask (dark coloration around eyes)
  2. Probable Signs
    • Enlargement of abdomen
    • Changes in size and shape of uterus
    • Ability to outline fetus on physical exam
    • Changes in cervix
    • Braxton Hick's contraction (false labor)
  3. Positive Signs
    • Fetal heart signs
    • Fetal movements felt by examiner
    • X-ray - outline of fetal skeleton
    • Ultrasound demonstration of conceptus
    • Doppler
  4. Danger Signals in Pregnancy
    Call your doctor or go to the Emergency Room if you are experiencing any of the following symptoms:
    • Bloody or watery vaginal discharge
    • Abdominal cramping
    • Facial swelling
    • Severe headache
    • Visual disturbances
    • Chills or fever
    • Persistent vomiting
    • Painful urination
